Softball Be-Deviled by FDU in ECAC Tournament

Patchogue, N.Y. – St. Joseph's College (22-14) was defeated this evening, 6-3, by FDU-Florham (18-16) in the opening round of the 2014 ECAC Metro Softball Championship Tournament.  The Golden Eagles, the four-seed in the single elimination portion of the tournament, end their season with the loss.  Fifth-seeded FDU will advance to the double elimination weekend tournament at a site to be determined.

The FDU Devils got on the scoreboard early in the first as Maggie Murphy hit an RBI single that drove Brittni Wurst home after she had doubled.  SJC tied the game in the bottom of the second as an FDU error allowed Megan Leun to score.

Nikki Caruso homered to left to give the Devils the lead back in the third.  They then tacked on another run as Murphy brought in Wurst again with a single to make it 3-1.

FDU broke it open in the sixth with a two-run homer from Jaclyn Herrington, scoring Sarah Lima who led off with a double.  Paige Lillie continued the rally with a single and Wynne McCann brought her around with a double to right center.

St. Joseph's put together a late two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh with one out.  Samantha Carcano singled to left, Gianna Gulli then hit a dribbler single in front of home plate, then Julianne Tierney singled to right to bring home Carcano.  Melanie Boccio singled to left to plate Gulli, but that was all the Eagles could muster as the game concluded 6-3.

Cassie Martinez (10-8) took the loss for St. Joseph's as she allowed five earned runs and nine hits over five innings.  Amanda Finn (9-5) picked up the win for the Devils going the full seven innings, allowing ten hits and two earned runs (three total).
