Softball Remains Perfect in Skyline, Takes Two from Old Westbury

Old Westbury, N.Y. - Lady Golden Eagle pitchers Mallory McClafferty (Bellport, N.Y./ St. John's the Baptist) and Lauren Buturla (Hauppauge, N.Y./ Hauppauge) both threw shutouts as SJC triumphed over Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference doubleheader, winning 10-0 and 8-0, at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.

With the victory, St. Joseph's improves their overall record to 11-8 with a Skyline record of 5-0, as the Panthers dropped to 3-13 overall with a conference record of 0-4 on the season.

McClafferty headed the win in the first game, striking out four batters and allowing only two hits.

The Golden Eagles tallied 13 hits of their own, with Nicole Reda (St. James, N.Y./ Our Lady of Mercy) leading SJC with three hits and three RBI.  Centerfielder Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and catcher Melanie Boccio (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South-Manor) both added two hits each, with Boccio adding three RBI.

The Lady Eagles had an impressive start, scoring four runs in the fourth inning, and then three runs in the seventh inning to top the Panthers.

SJC's strong pitching and hitting translated into the second game, as they were able to finish off the Panthers after six innings.

Buturla received the win after recording two strikeouts and allowing only two hits to complete the shutout.

Golden Eagle infielder Lindsey Corriss headed the offense with a team tying-two hits and a game-high three runs.

In the second, Corriss singled with two Eagles on base , when a Panther defender mishandled the ball to allow St. Joseph's to score three unearned runs for an early 4-0 lead.  She was also able put the finishing touches on Old Westbury during the top of the sixth inning, scoring an unearned run after Madeline Sgagna (East Quogue, West Hampton Beach) singled to left field.

St. Joseph's College's will take the field this Wednesday against FDU-Florham (5-9) for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at the SJC Outdoor Complex.
