Kissimmee, FL| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team opened its 2017 campaign with a pair of losses, 1-0 and 5-0, to Kean University and Simpson College, respectively, at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL on Wednesday afternoon.

The defeats ensure the Golden Eagles begin their season with an 0-2 record as Kean improves to 10-0 and Simpson to 3-9.

Kean 1, SJC 0

In her first start with the Golden Eagles, senior Theresa Cardello tossed four shutouts and allowed seven hits in 8.1 innings of work.

SJC's first hit of the season came off the bat of junior Kristen Arbiter, who singled through the left side in the top of the third to advance sophomore Jillian McFadzen to second.

Scoreless into the top of the eighth, junior Valerie Scura's sacrifice hit to first saw Cardello move to third, but consecutive outs by McFadzen and Arbiter ended the inning.

Kean's winning run would come in the bottom of the ninth when Emily Bissonnette's sac fly scored Dana Knapp from third.

Arbiter and junior Sandra Foster were the only two Golden Eagles to record hits in the loss.

Simpson 5, SJC 0

SJC was limited to just two hits for the second-straight contest in a 5-0 defeat to Simpson. Senior transfer Lyndsay Smocer and Foster were the two to generate the offense in a game that saw SJC struck out on five occasions.

Junior Lauren Buturla got the start and threw 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits. Fellow classman Ashley Blydenburgh saw 1.1 innings of relief and allowed zero hits, striking out one batter.

The Golden Eagles return to action at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow, March 9, when they face Montclair St. and Beloit in 9:00am and 11:15am contests, respectively.
