Softball Sweeps Sarah Lawrence, 11-2 and 7-1

Bronxville, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team opened its Skyline Conference campaign with a pair of victories, 11-2 and 7-1, over Sarah Lawrence College on the road on Saturday afternoon.

With the wins the Golden Eagles improve to 5-7 on the year (2-0 Skyline) as the Gryphons slide to 5-9 (2-2).

Game 1: SJC 11, Sarah Lawrence 2

After going up 1-0 in the second, SJC fell behind 2-1 following a two-run third for the Gryphons but used a seven-run fifth to build a commanding 9-2 lead.

A two-run sixth, capped off by an Ashley Steponaitis RBI single down the left field line, would later bring the Golden Eagles sudden victory by an 11-2 scoreline.

Lyndsay Smocer went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and three hits to power the SJC offense. Kristen Arbiter (2-for-4, 2 runs) was the only other Golden Eagle with multiple hits.

Theresa Cardello (3-2) pitched all six innings for SJC and allowed four hits and struck out three batters.

Game 2: SJC 7, Sarah Lawrence 1

Scoreless until the third, SJC jumped out to a 4-0 lead and tacked on a fifth run in the fourth via a Madeline Sganga groundout that scored Franzelyn Russo.

The Gryphons responded in the fifth but runs in the sixth and seventh earned SJC the 7-1 victory.

Sganga (1-for-4), Smocer (1-for-3), Arbiter (1-for-3), Samantha Magerovich and Elise Grau (1-for-4) all recorded RBI's for SJC.

Lauren Buturla (1-4) picked up her first win of the season in a complete-game effort that saw the junior fan one batter.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 28 when they take on Yeshiva University at Fordham University at 6:00 pm. Live stats will be available here.
