Softball Splits Skyline Twin Bill at Mount St. Mary

Newburgh, NY| The second-place St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader, 2-0 and 3-1, with first-place Mount St. Mary College in what was a battle of the conference's last undefeated teams.

The Golden Eagles, now 15-7 overall on the year and 11-1 in Skyline play, hold on to second place and continue to trail the Knights (15-14, 13-1) in the Skyline standings.

SJC 2, MSMC 0

A classic pitchers duel, game one featured the conference's top two pitchers: senior Theresa Cardello (8-2) for SJC and Cindy Connoly (9-8) for the Knights.

Cardello (0-for-3) would strike out eight batters and allow five hits and zero earned runs. The hurler has not allowed an earned run in her previous four pitching appearances and currently boasts a 0.99 ERA.

Connoly (1-for-1) retired 15 St. Joseph's batters and allowed only three hits. Two of those three hits scored runs: an RBI single off the bat of junior Jillian McFadzen (1-for-3) and senior Kristen Arbiter's (1-for-3) solo home run.

MSMC 3, SJC 1

Connoly (1-for-2) opened the scoring for the hosts in the top a third with an RBI double to left to give the Knights a 1-0 lead they would hold until the top of the sixth.

Sophomore Ashley Accardi (2-for-3) scored junior Lyndsay Smocer (2-for-3) with an RBI single to knot the score at one but two runs for the Knights in the bottom of the sixth were enough to hold off SJC for a 3-1 win.

Senior Ashley Blydenburgh (7-3) fanned four MSMC batters and allowed three earned runs in her first start since being named ECAC Metro and Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, April 28 when they visit SUNY Purchase for a Skyline Conference doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
