Softball Defeated by Mount Saint Mary in Skyline Final

Patchogue, NY| The second-seeded St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team was defeated by top-seeded Mount Saint Mary College in the final game of the 2018 Skyline Conference Softball Championship at the Outdoor Field Complex on Sunday morning.

The Golden Eagles (20-10) dropped both of their match-ups to the Knights at the double-elimination tournament that ran from Friday to Sunday.

Mount Saint Mary (20-14) claims its third-straight conference title and earns an automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Championship.

Senior Theresa Cardello (10-5) got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed nine hits and three earned runs in a seven-strikeout performance.

Mount Saint Mary's Cindy Connoly (13-8) struck out nine SJC batters and tossed a complete-game shutout. The senior was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player for the third-straight year.

The Knights opened the scoring in the top of the second when Cardello hit Bridget Bennett (0-for-0) with a pitch that forced Taylor Canto (2-for-4) home.

A stalemate through to the seventh inning, the guests made it a three-run contest when Laurn Oury (1-for-3) scored Emily Lang (2-for-4) and Erin McCann (0-for-0) with a two-RBI single to left center.

Connoly (0-for-2) would lock it down from there and guide the Knights to a 3-0 championship victory.

Cardello (1-for-3) and sophomores Ashley Accardi (1-for-2) and Elise Grau (1-for-2) recorded SJC's three hits.
