Softball Picks Up Wins over St. Norbert, Grinnell on Sunday

Kissimmee, FL| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team improved to 4-2 on the year with a pair of victories over St. Norbert (8-4) and Grinnell (10-7) at The Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL on Sunday.

SJC 8, St. Norbert 4

SJC fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first but rallied to take its first lead of the game, 6-4, when freshman Victoria Iavarone (1-for-1) singled and scored both sophomore Zoe Kelly and junior Franzelyn Russo (1-for-2) in the bottom of the sixth.

The Golden Eagles tacked on two additional runs later in the inning courtesy of RBI singles of the bats of senior Lyndsay Smocer (2-for-3) and sophomore Lindsay Ness (2-for-4).

Freshman Patricia McGloin allowed zero earned runs and picked up the first win of her collegiate career in a complete-game effort that yielded three strikeouts.

SJC 10, Grinnell 7

With the score tied at four in the top of the fifth, SJC broke the game wide open with a five-run inning and went up 9-4. After Russo (1-for-2), freshman Catherine Zucker (0-for-0) and sophomore Katelyn Valente (0-for-0) all scored, Kelly scored juniors Elise Grau (1-for-3) and Ashley Accardi (0-for-5) with a two-RBI single.

Grinnell got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth (9-7), but Grau capped off the game's scoring in the top of the seventh with an RBI single through the left side.

Valente allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings but Alyssa Rivera (0-for-3) collected the win in 2.1 innings of relief work.

The Golden Eagles return to action at The Spring Games on Monday, March 18 with contests vs. Rutgers-Newark (11:45 am) and Ramapo (4:15 pm).
