Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader with Mount St. Mary College at the SJC Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. St. Joseph's picked up a 2-1 win in game one before dropping the second game by a 6-4 scoreline.
With the split the Golden Eagles move to 11-9 overall on the year and 7-1 in Skyline action as the Knights slide to 8-14 (7-1 Skyline).
Game 1: SJC 2, MSMC 1
The hosts opened the scoring in the first inning when junior Elise Grau (2-for-3) scored sophomore Kassandra Tibbetts (0-for-2) with an RBI single through the left side (1-0).
Mt. St. Mary found an equalizing run in the top of the seventh, but junior Meagan McClinchey (1-for-1) scored sophomore Zoe Kelly (0-for-0) in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double to right to clinch a 2-1 win for the Golden Eagles.
Freshman hurler Catherine Zucker (4-3) struck out six batters and allowed five hits in a complete-game victory.
Game 2: MSMC 6, SJC 4
St. Joseph's took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Knights responded in the bottom of the second with three runs of their own to tie the game 3-3.
The guests took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth but SJC knotted the game up, 4-4, in the bottom half of the inning when junior Franzelyn Russo (1-for-3) ran out an inside-the-park home run.
Mt. St. Mary's retook the the lead in the fifth inning (5-4) and posted an insurance marker in the sixth en route to a 6-4 win.
Junior Alyssa Rivera (4-3) tossed 4.1 innings and took the loss for SJC. Freshman Patricia McGloin saw 2.2 innings of relief work.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, April 9 when they host the College of Mount St. Vincent for a Skyline Conference doubleheader at 5:00 pm
