Softball and Staten Island Split Non-Conference Doubleheader

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team rallied for a 6-4 victory in game two after dropping a 7-3 decision to the College of Staten Island in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at the SJC Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The split moves the Golden Eagles to 16-12 overall on the year as the Dolphins slide to 10-12.

Game 1: CSI 7, SJC 3

The Dolphins went up 2-0 in the third before later building a 5-1 advantage in the top of the fourth. SJC brough two runs back in the bottom of the fifth when senior Lyndsay Smocer (1-for-3) belted a two-RBI single up the middle but CSI responded with two more runs in the sixth and rode out a 7-3 win.

Freshman Jenna DeFina hit 3-for-4 in the contest and scored once. She was the only Golden Eagle to record multiple hits.

Freshman Catherine Zucker (6-5) struck out four and allowed four earned runs in a losing effort for the hosts. Freshman Samantha Yannetti and sophomore Katelynn Valenta provided 0.1 and 2.0 innings of relief work, respectively.

Game 2: SJC 6, CSI 4

CSI took an early three-run lead in the top of the first inning but the Golden Eagles responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own. Sophomore Kassandra Tibbetts (2-for-3) put the hosts on the board with an RBI double down the left field line before sophomore Lindsay Ness (1-for-2) doubled to left and drove in a pair of runs (3-3).

Tibbetts gave SJC its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the third when she belted a three-run homer to left field to put the Golden Eagles up 6-3. CSI brought one back in the top of the seventh but eventually succumbed to a 6-4 defeat.

Junior Alyssa Rivera (6-3) allowed three earned runs in a complete-game winning effort in the pitcher's circle.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 24 when they host FDU-Florham for a non-conference doubleheader at 4:00 pm.
