DeFina Breaks Single-Season Stolen Bases Record in Softball’s Split with FDU-Florham

Patchogue, NY| Freshman Jenna DeFina set a new program record for stolen bases in the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team's non-conference split with FDU-Florham on Wednesday evening. SJC dropped an 8-6 decision in game one before posting a 3-0 win in game two.

With the split the Golden Eagles move to 17-13 overall on the year as the Devils slide to 13-18.

Game 1: FDU 8, SJC 6

SJC took a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Kassandra Tibbetts (4-for-4) scored DeFina (2-for-3) with an RBI double to center field but the guests pulled ahead 3-1 in the top of the third.

Down 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh, SJC rallied for three runs (8-6)—RBI singles from Lindsay Ness (1-for-4) and Meagan McClinchy (1-for-1) and an RBI double from Alyssa Rivera (2-for-3)—but it wouldn't be enough to force extra innings.

Rivera (6-4) tossed 4.0 innings and allowed six earned runs in a losing effort for SJC. Catherine Zucker provided 3.0 innings of relief work.

Game 2: SJC 3, FDU 0

Lyndsay Smocer (3-for-3) singled to right and scored Tibbetts (2-for-4) to open the scoring in the first inning and Ashley Accardi (1-for-3) doubled the hosts' lead later in the frame with an RBI single down the left field line.

Tibbetts extended SJC's lead to three runs (3-0) in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to right, and from there the Golden Eagles blanked the Devils en route to a shutout victory.

Katelyn Valente (2-2) struck out six and allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort.

DeFina (2-for-4) stole three bases in the contest and brought her season total to 29, breaking Lindsey Coriss' record set in 2016.
