Softball Knocks Off Mt. St. Mary in Skyline Championship Opener

Farmingdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team surged to a 7-2 victory over Mt. St. Mary College (14-21-1) in Game 4 of the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship at Farmingdale State College on Friday afternoon.

Second-seeded SJC (20-13) moves on to face top-seeded Farmingdale in Game 6 of the double-elimination tournament on Saturday morning.

Sophomore Kassandra Tibbetts went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI powering an SJC offense that produced seven hits.

Freshman Jenna Kreiling went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI and senior Lyndsay Smocer went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Freshman hurler Catherine Zucker started in the pitcher's circle for SJC and allowed two earned runs in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Katelynn Valente (4-2) struck out four in 5.1 scoreless innings and picked up the win.

St. Joseph's jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Lindsay Ness (1-for-4) and a Mt. St. Mary throwing error that allowed two Golden Eagles to score.

The Knights brought two runs back in the second inning (3-2) before Valente replaced Zucker. Smocer knocked in a run in the fourth (4-2) with an RBI single to center and enabled the Golden Eagles to pull ahead 6-2 with a two-run fifth.

Tibbetts belted a homer to center field in the bottom of the sixth (7-2) to wrap the contest's scoring.

Saturday's game six vs. host Farmingdale State begins at 10:00 am. The winner will play in Sunday's championship final.
