Lady Eagles Drop Second Straight to Start the Season

New York, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (0-2) couldn't handle the Wheelock Wildcats (1-1) in their second contest of the Hunter College Tournament as the Wildcats pounced on the Eagles, 87-57 on Saturday.

The Eagles started the game similar to the night before as they fell behind early, 12-3. Their first five baskets came from behind the arc as Christina Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) and Laura Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) both hit two three-pointers over the span of the first twelve minutes but St. Joseph's trailed 30-15.

Unlike Friday night's game, the Eagles limited the turnovers to four in the first half compared to 18. From that point on, the Golden Eagles kept the deficit around fifteen for the better part of the first half but the Wildcats went on a 15-to-3 run over the course of the last three minutes. They entered halftime leading the Eagles 53-30.

St. Joseph's cut the lead back down to fifteen to start the second half but ten unanswered points from the Wildcats put the game out of reach with ten minutes remaining. The Eagles once again went quiet for around six minutes of play. After cutting the deficit back to nineteen, the Wildcats pulled away. They went on a 13-0 run to extend the lead to 31.

Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles had three scorers in double digits. Christina Cohen led the way with sixteen points. Laura Cohen added fourteen giving the two Cohen's 30 points each to start the season over the first two games. Danielle Hamlin (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) had the best all-around game for the Lady Eagles with fifteen points, six rebounds, four assists, and a steal.

The Eagles will host Lehman in their first home game of the season this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
