Bloodhounds Bite Lady Eagles and Drop SJC to 0-4

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Lady Golden Eagles (0-4) — an already small squad limited further by injuries early on in the season — have had a difficult time gaining momentum in this 2013-14 season. However, despite their recent losses, SJC's terrific effort against the ultimately victorious John Jay Bloodhounds (0-2) on Friday was encouraging despite a 73-68 defeat.

The Bloodhounds' initial four-point burst to begin the game didn't, by any means, secure a massive lead ahead of the Eagles but it was, unfortunately, a lead that the home team could not overcome. The Eagles succeeded in bringing the game within three with two minutes left in the first half but the Bloodhounds, having gathered themselves after SJC's attempted comeback, went on a five-point run to lead the half 40-32.

The second half mirrored the first in that, while the Lady Eagles remained on the Bloodhounds' tail, they would not pass them.  The game ended with a painfully close 73-68 finish.

While the scoreboard declared John Jay as the dominant team, the Golden Eagles actually surpassed the Bloodhounds in a few key aspects of the game.  Their 73.5% free throw percentage was stellar compared to the Bloodhounds' 51%; they also secured 11 points off of offensive rebounds.  While logging only 11 turnovers themselves, the Eagles capitalized on the Bloodhounds' flaws by scoring 23 points off of John Jay's 31 turnovers. Danielle Hamlin (Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown East) led the team in points with 23 in addition to her eight rebounds, followed closely by Laura Cohen's (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach) 21 points and 10 boards.

The Lady Eagles will travel to Vassar on December 4 with the hopes of securing their first win of the season.
