Mariners Sink Eagles to Keep SJC Winless

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Lady Golden Eagles (0-7) are still struggling to earn their first win of the season after falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (2-6) on Wednesday, 60-37.

Both teams were slow to get into a scoring groove, as the scoreboard remained unlit for the first three minutes of the game.  The Eagles were able to stay with the Mariners for the majority of the first half, gaining a temporary one-point lead at 8:50 and lagging by only five points at the halftime buzzer.

The visiting team kicked it into gear in the second half though, slowly breaking away from the Lady Eagles and eventually achieving a 20-point lead.  Despite their aggressive defense, multiple steals and minimum turnovers, the Eagle's were unable to capitalize on their possessions; their shots were simply not falling.

Laura Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown East) led the team in points with 14 in addition to her three steals and three turnovers.  Christina Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown East) contributed with ten points and four steals while Danielle Hamlin (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach) had four points and six rebounds.

The Eagles will take on their sister team on December 21, the St. Joseph's College Brooklyn Bears, for SJC's annual East vs. West game in Brooklyn.
