Super Senior Quartet Powers SJC Past Poly

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Lady Golden Eagles (3-20, 3-12 SKY) brought the heat Friday night against the NYU Polytechnic Fighting Blue Jays (2-22, 0-13 SKY) in what became their third win of the season, trumping the visiting team, 58-49. The night of the well deserved victory also served as the team's Senior Night, in which four graduating seniors — Danielle Hamlin (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach), Laura Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown East), Christina Cohen (Smithtown, N.Y./ Smithtown East) and Colleen Fitzsimons (Commack, N.Y./ Commack) — were honored. In Friday's game, Danielle, Christina and Laura each scored well into the double digits while Colleen, fierce on the boards, ripped down ten rebounds.

The Eagles started out on the right foot against the Blue Jays, as Katie McGarrel's (Selden, N.Y./ Newfield) made jump shot one minute into the game jumpstarted her team.  The Eagles were nothing short of threatening on the three-point line as both Hamlin and Christina Cohen sunk two three's each in the first half alone.  The Lady Eagles did run into some foul trouble early on (which proved to be detrimental as the Blue Jays were 8-11 from the free throw line in the first half), but they managed to stay in the game and even establish a comfortable 31-24 lead by halftime.

The Blue Jays put up a fight in the second half, narrowing their deficit to only four at one point, but the Eagles remained on top through to the final buzzer.  Overall, as a team, the Eagles forced 13 turnovers, ripped down 63 rebounds and knocked down five shots via blocks.  Christina Cohen led the team's offensive forces with 16 points in addition to her two assists and five rebounds.  On top of her 13 points, Hamlin also dominated on the defensive end of the court with a whopping 16 rebounds. Laura Cohen logged ten points, seven rebounds and three steals while Fitzsimons charted four points, ten rebounds, a block and an assist.

The seniors honored Friday night were true record breakers in all areas of the game and their talent will be sorely missed by the SJC women's basketball program.

As of Friday night, Christina Cohen is now the record holder at SJC for the most three-pointers made in a career with 179.  She ranks 11th in her total points scored with 910, 6th in steals with 213 and 9th in assists with 170.

Laura Cohen is very close behind as she is now owns the second highest total of three-pointers with 156.  She is ranked 3rd in SJC history for total points scored with 1203, 3rd for assists with 247 and 7th in steals with 208.

Danielle Hamlin, much like her teammates, is also a force to be reckoned with on the three-point line, as she is now the 4th highest three-point scorer in SJC history with 142. She ranks 7th in assists with 175 and 6th in rebounds with 572.

Colleen Fitszimons, having been plagued with injuries for much of her basketball career, still proved to be an invaluable teammate both on and off the court.  She has logged an impressive 139 total points scored, 193 rebounds, 39 blocks and 19 assists.

While their efforts thus far have been incredible, the Lady Eagles' season is not over yet.  They are set to face the Purchase Panthers on February 23 in a 12 p.m. road game, their last Skyline Conference game of the season.
