W. Basketball Blasts Medgar Evers in Lopsided Win

Patchogue, N.Y. - The Golden Eagles women's basketball team (1-2) beat down Medgar Evers College (0-2) Wednesday night at the Danzi Center, 67-33.  St. Joseph's outscored the Cougars 33-11 in the first half and their dominance carried into the second half, adding another 34 to their 22.

After dropping two straight road games to start the season, Coach Mike Petre's team rebounded in a big way.  The Golden Eagles put on a show for their home crowd, finishing with season-highs in rebounds (51), assists (15), and steals (15).  The squad played great all-around ball, crashing the boards, spreading the ball around, and repressing the Cougar's offensive attack.

Leading the attack was sophomore Jackie Zizzo (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage).  Zizzo finished the night with an impressive showing of 21 points (8-17).  Of her eight total field goals, five were from behind the arc.  She also registered an assist and two steals.  Meanwhile, sophomore Teddi Petre had season-highs in two categories, assists (8) and steals (4).  Petre also had her best assist/turnover ratio of the season (4:1), which is a promising sign of development from the guard.

Freshman forward Andrea Iavarone almost had her first double-double of her collegiate career, contributing nine points (3-4) and nine rebounds, and hit 3-of-6 shots from the line.  Coming off the bench, junior Katie McGarrell finished with nine points (4-8), nine rebounds, three steals, and hit 1-2 of her free throws.  In just 19 minutes, McGarrell played a key role in the team's dominating play inside the paint.

Freshman Jennifer Gubell continued the team's barrage of three's, adding three of her own.  Freshman Claire Brady knocked down a three-pointer in her 18-minutes, also contributing four rebounds, an assist, and two steals.  All around, the team performed well and that is just what the doctor ordered to stop the bleeding, early in the season.  Hosting the next three games on their home court, SJC has chance to boost its record over .500 heading into the second quarter of the season.

Their next game will be on Friday, November 21 against Vassar College (1-2).  Tip-off will be at 7:00 p.m. in the John A. Danzi Athletic Center.
