Lehman Lightning Strikes Lady Eagles Down on the Road

Bronx, N.Y. - The Lady Golden Eagles (2-6) tumbled in a non-conference matchup to the Lehman College Lighting (6-3), losing 70-52 on Tuesday night.

The Golden Eagles struggled mightily throughout the game shooting 24.6% on the night, while the Lighting posted three players scoring in double-figures.

The Lighting looked fresh from the initial period, starting the game off with a 21-6 run over SJC. At 9:40 Jennifer Gubell (Levittown, N.Y./ MacArthur) hit a much needed three-pointer followed by a jumper to spark a run for the Eagles.

St. Joseph's went on an 11-6 run over the Lighting with forward Andrea Iavarone (Miller Place, N.Y./ Miller Place) and guard Jackie Zizzo (Bethpage, N.Y.) both finding contact in the paint to make crucial free throws and cutting the deficit to ten points (the lowest of the game). The Lighting's offense would close out the first half outscoring SJC 40-27.

Lehman's flashy offense would plateau in the second period, only being able to connect on ten shots. St. Joseph's had plenty of opportunities to fight their way back into play, but poor shooting stopped any possible comeback. The Golden Eagles were able to create shots, outshooting the Lighting 34-22 in the second period, but they were only able to connect on eight of them.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles were outscored 30-25. The Lighting's largest lead of the night was 23 points, which occurred three minutes into the second period.

Overall the Lady Eagle's shot well from the free throw line, hitting 15-for-23.

SJC's bench outplayed the Lighting outscoring the home team 17-0, with Gubell leading the bench play with eight points and four rebounds.

Iavarone was close to a double-double, scoring 13 points and nine boards, while shooting 9-for-11 from the free throw line.  Zizzo also posted 13 points along with tearing down four boards and dishing two assists.

The Golden Eagles next matchup with be the annual "East vs. West" contest versus sister school- St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn (9-1) in a non-conference rivalry contest in Brooklyn on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
