CCNY Derails W. Basketball in Non-Conference Action

Patchogue, N.Y.- After coming off an impressive victory over Skyline Conference opponent-Mount Saint Mary, the Lady Golden Eagles (4-10) fell short in their following matchup against the City College of New York Beavers, losing the non-conference game, 58-40, Tuesday night at the Danzi Center.

The Golden Eagles had troubles early finding the bottom of the net, as SJC dug a 10-2 hole through the first five minutes of action. Due to exceptional shooting from the free throw line, St. Joseph's was able to cut the Beaver's lead to four points after guard Meaghan Haber (East Northport, N.Y./ John Glenn) hit  a jump shot with 3:51 remaining in the first half.  SJC had the opportunity to cut the lead to two points, but Michelle Lupoli (Massapequa, N.Y./ Massapequa) was unable to connect on her jumper.

The Beavers finished the first period with a 27-16 lead over the Eagles.

Coming out of the half, the Beavers continued to drop baskets, shooting over 40 percent from inside the arc, while the Eagles struggled shooting just 24%.

Although CCNY outscored the Golden Eagles, St. Joseph's College played tenacious defense throughout the contest as SJC out-rebounded the Beavers 43-42, as well as forcing 19 turnovers and tallying nine steals.

The Golden Eagles shot an impressive 85 percent from the free throw line connecting on 12-of-14.

Forward Andrea Iavarone (Miller Place, N.Y./ Miller Place) led the way for St. Joseph's by scoring a game-high 18 points, hitting 6-for-6 from the free throw line, while taking down eight rebounds.

St. Joseph's will look to get back in a winning groove as they face the Sage Gators (6-4, 1-1 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference game this Saturday at the Danzi Center at 1:00 p.m.
