Ladies Drop Skyline Game to Tough Sage Squad on Road

Albany, N.Y. – The Golden Eagles (4-16, 2-7 Skyline) went down early, but continued fighting until the end in a Skyline Conference road loss against second place-Sage College (12-5, 6-2 Skyline) this afternoon.

Guard Jackie Zizzo (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) led SJC with 20 points, while picking up three rebounds, two assists and a steal.  Forward Andrea Iavarone (Miller Place, N.Y / Miller Place) chipped in with ten points and five rebounds.  Forward Katie McGarrell (Selden, N.Y. / Newfield) corralled a team-high eight rebounds and scored six points.

At half, the Golden Eagles were down 37-14. Leading the team in the first was forward Michelle Lupolli (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), with four points. With 5:46 left on the clock, guard Jennifer Gubell (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) hit a three-point shot to give the team a burst of energy.

The rallying went back and forth, with most points directed towards Sage who posted a 75% free-throw percentage and 46% from the floor.

Heading into the second half, the Golden Eagles had to find momentum in order to come back from a 23-point lead held by Sage. Although the away game didn't end in a victory, the Golden Eagles made many advances, turning it into a closer finish.

The Golden Eagles posted 40 points in the second half topping Sage's 34. With 10:45 left on the clock, McGarrell was awarded two free throws, converted the first, and the Gators turned the possession over.  Zizzo took advantage by scoring four points for the team in about one minute — followed by a three-point goal from Claire Brady (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), but the deficit was too great to overcome.

With just four games left in regular season Skyline Conference play, the Golden Eagles need to find the fire that will guide them to a playoff spot. They'll be in search for a win in their next game against Yeshiva University (3-12, 2-3 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference home game this Thursday, February 12 on their home court at the Danzi Athletic Center.
