Patchogue, NY| Despite a career-best 32-point performance by junior Andrea Iavarone, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team surrendered a first-half lead to sister school St. Joseph's College (Brkln) in a 72-66 defeat inside the Danzi Center on Thursday night.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-3 (0-1 Skyline) on the year, while the Bears improve to 2-3 (1-0 Skyline).

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead to start the game, St. Joseph's allowed the visitors to take a one-point lead (6-5) at the 7:57 mark. Two baskets from Iavarone would give the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the quarter (5), but two made baskets by Caitlyn Staab would reduce SJC's lead to one (11-10). Iavarone capped off the quarter scoring six of Long Island's nine points to give the hosts a 20-17 lead.

Iavarone set the tone again in the second quarter with a made basket to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 22-17. The Bears tied the game at 26 after a Destiny Marino layup with 5:32 to play in the half. SJC and the Bears both fought for the lead, recording four lead changes in the final four minutes of the half, but the hosts entered the break with a two-point advantage (34-32).

SJC would maintain an eight-point lead in the final three minutes of the quarter, as the Golden Eagles headed into the final frame with a 56-48 advantage.

The Bears would use a 16-3 run to claim their first lead since the second quarter (64-59) at the 4:37 mark. The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to one (66-65) after a layup by Danielle Gehring with 3:16 to play, but from there the Bears staved off any comeback attempt by the Golden Eagles, scoring the game's six final points to claim the 72-66 win.
