Women's Basketball Drops Crucial Skyline Game to Mt. St. Mary

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team suffered a 78-43 defeat to Mount St. Mary College in a Skyline Conference matinee on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 5-14 (4-8 Skyline) on the season while the Knights improve to 14-4 (10-2).

St. Joseph's would get on the board first courtesy of a Jackie Zizzo three-pointer less than a minute into the game. After falling behind 6-3 at 6:35 Michelle Lupoli tied the game up at 6, before an Alicia Indence three-pointer gave SJC a 9-8 lead. Mount St. Mary's took a 10-2 run into the 1:30 mark to take a seven-point lead (18-11). Indence ended the first frame with a made layup to cut Golden Eagles deficit to five.

After a slow start to the second quarter, MSMC took their first double-digit lead (23-13) at 6:30, before MSMC sparked a 6-0 run to the 1:54 mark to take a 15-point lead. Michelle Lupoli converted on her and-one attempt at the end of the half to send SJC into the break trailing 33-21.

The Golden Eagles were able to shorten their deficit to 10 points after a Lupoli jumper at 7:51, but the Knights responded back with a 22-3 run to close out the third with a 29-point lead (59-30).

The Knights picked up where they left off in the fourth taking a 10-2 run into the midway point of the quarter. At 1:18 MSMC took its largest lead of the game, 37 points (78-41), before cruising to a 78-43 victory.  

Indence led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 18 points, and Lupoli contributed with 11 points in the contest and six rebounds.

The Golden Eagles shot just 38.5% from the field compared to the Knights' 44.4%. The Knights also held advantages in rebounds (51-20) and assists (19-12).
