USMMA Topples Women's Basketball in Season Finale

Kings Point, NY | The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team was defeated by the US Merchant Marine Academy, 75-25, in the season finale on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Golden Eagles slip to 6-19 (5-13 Skyline) while the Mariners improve to 12-12 (8-10 Skyline).

After a slow start to the game, SJC would get on the board first courtesy of an Alicia Indence three-pointer at the 8:00 mark. Tied 7-7 at the midway point of the first, the Mariners took a 12-2 run up to the 1:49 mark, before closing out the frame with a 19-11 advantage.

Myckenzie Taylor began the second with a made jumper that sparked a scoring frenzy for USMMA, dropping 21 unanswered points with a 29-point advantage over the visitors' at the break.

The two teams traded baskets to the halfway mark of the third quarter with USMMA leading the Golden Eagles 52-18, before exiting the frame with a commanding 35-point lead (55-20).

The Mariners come out the gates with the hot hand in the fourth taking an 11-3 run to the 5:44 mark of the quarter for the 43-point lead. With 2:05 on the clock, USMMA to its largest lead of the contest (74-23) to down SJC 75-25.

Juliana Cintron-Leonardo led the team in scoring with five point points in addition to adding four rebounds.

The Golden Eagles shot just 17.8% from the field compared to the Mariners' 42.6%. USMMA also held advantages in rebounds (55-21) and assists (14-3).
