Women’s Basketball Outpaced by Old Westbury in Skyline Showdown

Old Westbury, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball kicked-off its post-holiday-break schedule with a 106-53 road defeat to Skyline Conference rival SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon.

The loss sees the Golden Eagles slip to 4-7 (1-4 Skyline) on the season as a potent Old Westbury side improves to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Senior Jennifer Gubell sank six three-pointers and led SJC with 18 points. Fellow classman Andrea Iavarone contributed 16 points and five rebounds, and junior Alicia Indence went for seven points and two assists.

The Panthers were powered by Charlotte Renker and Destiny Marino, who tallied 23 and 22 points, respectively.

Down nine after the first quarter (25-16), St. Joseph's was outscored 25-16 in the second and trailed 52-21 at the break.

More of the same followed in the second half as the Golden Eagles, who shot 29.5% from the field, succumbed to a 106-53 defeat.

Old Westbury was lights out from both the field (56.4%) and three (72.7%) and also dominated in the paint where they outscored SJC 64-20.

St. Joseph's only statistical advantage came at the charity stripe where they outshot the Panthers 71.4% to 50.0%.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, January 10 when they host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a Skyline Conference contest at 6:00 pm. Live video and stats will be available here.
