Iavarone Breaks Single-Game Rebound Record in Win Over Farmingdale

Patchogue, NY| Senior Andrea Iavarone grabbed 27 boards to break the St. Joseph's College women's basketball program's single-game rebound record in an 83-69 victory over Farmingdale State College Monday evening.

The Skyline Conference win snaps a four-game skid and moves the Golden Eagles to 5-10 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.  The Rams slide to 8-9 overall and 7-3 in conference action.

Iavarone finished just two points shy of tying her own single-game points record with 37 points on the night and moved into second on SJC's all-time career points list.   Junior Alicia Indence and senior Jennifer Gubell finished in double figures with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Farmingdale was led by a double-double from Essence Casey with 29 points and 13 rebounds.  Kaelyn Ward pitched in with 23 points and seven boards and Alexis Antonacci rounded out the top scorers with 10 points.

After the teams went into the break deadlocked at 35, the Rams sank back-to-back buckets to open the third quarter, grabbing their largest lead of the night, 39-35.

SJC answered quickly and regained the lead following a layup from Juliana Cintron-Leonardo at the 7:02 mark.  The Golden Eagles extended their lead to six, 55-46, with just under two minutes left in the quarter, but FSU's Casey put down five unanswered points to inch the Rams to within one, 55-54, heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

After Ward's free-throw knotted the game at 55 in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, St. Joseph's went on a 13-2 (68-57) run providing a bit of breathing room with 5:40 left on the clock.  A minute later the Rams would get to within seven, 68-61, but key free throw shooting by Indence down the stretch secured the 83-69 win.

As a team, SJC shot 43.5% from the field while holding the Rams to just 28.6%.  The Golden Eagles also outrebounded FSU 61-41 and held a 38-28 scoring edge in the paint.

St. Joseph's College returns to action Saturday, Jan. 27 when they host Purchase College.  Tip-off is slated for 1:00 pm.
