Women's Basketball Downed by College of Mt. St. Vincent

Riverdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College women's basketball team had its three game win streak snapped Thursday evening dropping a Skyline Conference contest to the College of Mt. St. Vincent, 90-64.

The loss puts the Golden Eagles at 7-11 on the season and 4-7 in conference action.  The Dolphins improve to 8-9 overall (6-7 Skyline).

Senior Andrea Iavarone led the Golden Eagles with a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds.  Senior Jennifer Gubell added 20 points and Juliana Cintron-Leonardo grabbed nine boards.

CMSV's Kelly Oliver recorded a game-high 23 points and 11 assists.  Kelly Nola went 7-for-11 from the field tallying 20 points and Kristen Merrill rounded out the top scorers with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Down five early in the opening quarter, Gubell drained a three followed by an Iavorne layup giving the Golden Eagles its first lead of the night, 12-11.  With the teams deadlocked at 17 and just over three minutes left in the frame, the Dolphins went on an 8-2 run jumping ahead 25-19.  Back-to-back buckets from Lindsey McKenna and Alicia Indence in the final minute brought the Golden Eagles to within two, 25-23, heading into the second quarter.

Seven unanswered CMSV points opened the second and the Dolphins held SJC to just eight points the entire quarter to go into the break leading 41-31.

The Dolphins extended their lead in the third frame outscoring the Golden Eagles 24-11 before building their largest advantage of the night, 85-53, in the fourth.  Gubell knocked down back-to-back threes with less than a minute on the clock, but CMSV came away with the 90-64 win.

St. Joseph's held a 77.8% to 60.0% edge at the free-throw line, but were outshot 50.7% to 37.3% from the field and 50.0% to 25.9% from beyond the arc.  The Dolphins held a 44-37 rebounding edge while converting 16 SJC turnovers into 24 points.

The Golden Eagles continue Skyline Conference play when they travel to Purchase College Saturday, Feb. 3.  Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
