Purchase Outpaces Women’s Basketball in Saturday Shootout

Purchase, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team (5-15, 4-8 Skyline) took a road defeat, 97-78, to SUNY Purchase (8-11, 5-9 Skyline) in a high-scoring Skyline Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

The loss came in spite of a sparkling performance by senior Andrea Iavarone, who shot 10-for-13 from the field, scored a team-high 25 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season.

Freshman Jami Cardenas, playing for the first time since January 16 vs. Mount St. Mary, contributed 17 points (5-for-11 3FG), and senior Jennifer Gubell drained five threes and recorded 15 points.

Carrying the load for the Panthers was Amber Jones, who shot 14-for-23 from the field and scored a game-high 42 points.

Trailing 56-37 at halftime, SJC put forth a better effort in the second half, losing the third by just one point (19-18) before outscoring Purchase 23-22 in the fourth.

Gubell led all SJC players with nine points (3-for-6 3FG) in the fourth quarter, but at the final buzzer it was a 19-point victory for the hosts.

Outshot from the field (46.5% to 37.5%) and from three (38.5% to 36.4%) St. Joseph's was forced into make 30 turnovers in the game but matched the Panthers, 45-45, in total rebounds.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, February 6 when they visit Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's College (Brkln) for a 7:00 pm match.
