Iavarone Becomes All-Time Leading Scorer in Win Over Yeshiva

Patchogue, NY| Senior Andrea Iavarone knocked down a team-high 21 points and became the St. Joesph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team's all-time leading scorer in a 72-66 win over Yeshiva University Thursday night.

Now with 1,422 career points, Iavarone leapfrogs Trish McMahon, who graduated in 2010 with 1,407 points.

The win pushes the Golden Eagles to 8-13 (5-9 Skyline) on the season as the Maccabees drop to 4-17 overall and 2-13 in conference play.

In addition to her 21 points, Iavarone contributed 24 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. N'dea Maddox, Lindsey McKenna, and Jami Cardenas all finished with 11 points apiece, while Jennifer Gubell and Alicia Indence both scored nine points.

Yeshiva's Nicole Bick finished with a game-high 31 points with four assists and four steals.  Michal Alge pitched in with a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles trailed for the first time of the night following a Bick three-ball with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter. Iavarone answered quickly, grabbing an offensive board and putting it back up for a 50-49 lead moments later. From there the two sides exchanged buckets down the stretch and went into the final frame knotted at 54.

The Maccabbes grabbed a slight advantage, 57-54, after free-throws from Alge and Celia Cohen at the start of the fourth, but back-to-back layups from Maddox and Iavarone put the Golden Eagles back on top, 58-57, with 7:31 left in the game. After a three-minute scoring drought, YU tied the game at 58, but SJC's Gubell drained a three to give the Golden Eagles a lead (61-58) that they would maintain on the way to a 72-66 victory.

Yeshiva out-shot the Golden Eagles 40% to 25% from three-point range as well as 70.6% to 63.6% from the charity stripe, but SJC held a 44.1% to 35.2% edge from the floor.

The Golden Eagles return to the Danzi Center Saturday, February 10 when they host Skyline Conference rival SUNY Old Westbury. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
