Women's Basketball Falters in Season Opener

New York, N.Y.| The St. Joseph's College women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a 79-64 loss to Baruch College on Thursday evening.

The Golden Eagles start the year at 0-1 as the Bearcats improve to 3-0.

A closely played opening frame saw SJC trailing by just one, 16-15, but Baruch put up 20 in the second quarter while holding St. Joseph's to just 13 to head into the break leading 36-28.

The Golden Eagles pulled to within four, 36-32, in the third quarter, but the Bearcats answered with five quick unanswered points and managed to hold off SJC for the remainder to come away with the 79-64 win.

St. Joseph's Alyssa Signor dropped in a game-best 25 points on 10-for-22 shooting from the field and 2-for-5 from three-point range. The sophomore added seven rebounds and two steals on the night. Freshman Julianna Knice finished in double figures with 11 points in her SJC debut. Freshmen Emma Lange and Catherine Siounis added nine and eight points, respectively, with the latter grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.

Nia Dawson recorded a double-double of 20 points and 10 boards to lead Bearcats. Melinda Spahiu finished with a well-rounded game knocking down 18 points with nine rebounds while adding six steals and three assists.

Baruch finished the night shooting 46.2% from the field while holding SJC to 33.3%.

The Golden Eagles open up at the Danzi Center on Saturday, November 16 when they host John Jay College at 1:00 pm.
