Women's Basketball Topped by Old Westbury in Skyline Opener

Old Westbury, NY| The St. Joseph's College women's basketball team was edged by SUNY Old Westbury, 66-60, in its Skyline Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles move to 1-3 on the season, 0-1 in Skyline play. The Panthers now sit at 1-3 overall, 1-0 Skyline.

Sophomore Megan Steinman led the SJC offense with 15 points and four assists off the bench. Freshman Julianna Knice was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line for 13 points with sophomore Alyssa Signor finishing in with 10 points.

Davida Warren paced the Panthers with a game-high 30 points and 22 rebounds. Ashley Cattle and Ja'Nya Flash pitched in with 10 points apiece.

OW took a slight 41-40 lead into the fourth quarter and increased the lead to 51-41 following a Slash layup at the 6:40 mark.  A pair of free throws from Signor cut the SJC deficit down to three, 59-56, with less than three minutes to play, but the Panthers responded with a Micah Browns layup in the next possession and managed to hold off the Golden Eagles for the 66-60 win.

St. Joseph's outshot the Panthers 36.7% to 34.2%, but the hosts held a 61-36 rebounding advantage as well as points in the paint, 42-26.

The Golden Eagles resume Skyline action on Tuesday, November 26 when they travel to face Farmingdale State at 5:30 pm.
