W. Lacrosse Rolls Past Emerson, 12-7

Patchogue, N.Y. - The Golden Eagles (2-1) women's lacrosse team was anxious to get back on the field against Boston's Emerson College (1-1), especially after a loss the previous weekend and were victorious 12-7.

It took only 13 seconds off the opening draw to get on the scoreboard as Heather Ferchland won the draw and spotted Jessica Cordano streaking to goal. Cordano took the pass and patiently led Kristine Minogue running on the opposite side, and Minogue drilled a bullet into the lower right corner of the cage.

Emerson did tie the score up three minutes later at 26:30, as Meredith Weber scored from Tayllar Righini. Next up for SJC was a full field goal scored as Courtney Wickline cleared to Ali Pavese who passed ahead to Minogue, and this time she found Jenna Kelleher in front for her first goal of the season at 18:41. However, this time it took Emerson only twenty seconds to come back as Kanika Misra got a shooting space foul call and converted the free position shot to knot the score at 2-2.

It was then that St. Joseph's College took over the game, scoring four times in seven and a half minutes.  Kelleher pounced on a bouncing ball in the crease, scooped it up and put in the shot. After that, Wickline again hit a clearing pass, this time to Gabby Bourguignon, who pushed it ahead to Ela Igdeler. The speedy Igdeler then drove downfield, drawing defenders and finally spotting Tori Gregson wide open on the crease. Gregson buried the shot for a 4-2 lead. Next up was Karalyn Tetelman, who also jumped on a free ball in the crease, and quickly put in the shot before the goalie could recover.

Three minutes later at 8:23, Jess Cordano blew by her defender driving to goal and was fouled on the shot.  She ended up with a free position shot and converted it to give the Golden Eagles a 6-2 lead. With 2:48 left in the half, Meredith Weber scored her second goal unassisted, and the margin was now 6-3.  Wickline this time hit Cordano with a clear, and Cordano found Tetelman on the sideline. Tetelman hit the open Kacie Mitterando, who laid out a nice pass to Gregson.  Gregson one timed it to Ferchland and the Golden Eagles went into the half with a 7-3 lead when Ferchland scored with 0:35 left.

SJC struck first in the second half to take their biggest lead.  At 25:39, Gregson found Jenna Kellleher in front of the goal, but Emerson would not fold.  Tayllar Righini got a pass from Guerin Morisette at 22:37 to bring the margin back to four goals at 8-4.  Two minutes later, Gregson hit Cordano for her second goal of the game.  Four minutes later Misra scored her second goal of the day off a Righini feed, and then Emerson would score back-to-back goals for the first time in the game.

With 12:12 left in the game, they drew the closest they would come for the rest of the game when Victoria Symanski got a pass from Misra to make the score 9-6.  SJC's Graceann Fallon stepped in to score off a feed from Tetelman and give the Golden Eagles a four goal margin with just 6:24 to go. Meredith Weber scored her third goal of the at 3:34 from Righin's third assist, but St. Joseph's came right back at 3:02 when Cordano finished her own hat trick on Gregson's fourth assist.  Igdeler was fouled driving to goal and ended the scoring by dishing off to Gregson with 46 seconds left for the final score of 12-7.

Emerson won the battle of draw controls 11-10 but the Golden Eagles outshot the visitors 31-14 and also won the ground ball battle 19-11.  Victoria Kanaris had 10 saves for Emerson and Courtney Wickline had four saves for St. Joseph's.  The Golden Eagles face Castleton State, from Vermont, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
