MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Getting two points from five different players, homestanding Wesleyan (5-3) pulled away from a tenuous 3-2 lead with 20 minutes remaining by scoring the final six goals of the game to come away with a 9-2 women's lacrosse victory over St. Joseph's (LI) (6-3) in the first-ever meeting of the squads. Wesleyan concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-0 mark, having outscored its five non-league opponents by a resounding 63-16 margin. Up next for the Cardinals is a NESCAC matchup with Colby Sat., March 29. St. Joseph's return to action Fri., March 28, hosting SUNY Purchase in a Skyline Conference contest.
Wesleyan got the first of two second-half goals from junior Caty Daniels at 18:34 of the second half to extend its one-goal lead to 4-2 as Daniels converted a pass from low on the left by freshman Becca Phillips. Phillips went on to add a free-position goal of her own at the 2:57 mark to make it an 8-2 lead. In between, freshman Meredith Smith, Daniels and sophomore Martha Harding all netted goals before Smith ended the six-goal flurry with her second of the game and team-leading 14th of the season at 2:33 for the 9-2 final.
The Golden Eagles got one goal each from their big guns, sophomores Heather Ferchland and Tori Gregson, both scoring on quick-stick shots in close off solid passes by senior Caitlin Halloran and junior Caitlynn Webber, respectively. Ferchland notched her team-high 25th of the year at 21:05 of the first half and Gregson tallied her 21st of the season at 25:09 of the second, making it a 3-2 game.
Junior Leah Sherman, Harding and freshman Liana Mathias all had first-half goals for Wesleyan, which led 3-1 at intermission. Harding, Smith and Daniels were the two-goal getters for the Cardinals while Sherman and Phillips had a goal and an assist for their two points.
Wesleyan had a decided 30-7 edge in total shots as St. Joseph's goalie, freshman Courtney Wickline, posted 13 saves. Wesleyan got four saves from its sophomore netminder Nina Labovich.
