Lacrosse Claws Way to Victory Over Kean Cougars in ECAC Quarterfinal

Patchogue, N.Y. – St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (14-5) upended the Kean Cougars (9-9) in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship Tournament on Wednesday evening, 10-9.  The #3-seed Eagles now advance to the semifinal round to play #2 McDaniel College on Saturday at Alvernia University at 2:00 p.m.  For #6-seed Kean, the loss ends their season.

SJC's Heather Ferchland opened the scoring at 27:42 but Kean's Julie Knodt answered back nearly 30 seconds later.  Tori Gregson put the Eagles ahead again at 2-1, but Kean answered with three straight to lead 4-2.  Ferchland would again cut the deficit to one but Kean's Ciara Mastrodomenico made it 5-3 at half.

To start the second, SJC came storming back with three straight goals by Ela Igdeler, Gregson and Ferchland to make it 6-5.  Kean did not stay quiet though as Maggie Brocklebank re-tied it at 6-6 at 23:38 then Jordan Blanda added a tally for the Cougars seventh goal.  Carly Seidel converted a free-position shot to put the game at 8-6 with 16:48 left.

At 13:37 the Golden Eagles Kacie Mitterando drew SJC within one and at 9:12 Ferchland tied the game up once more at 8-8 and put them ahead, 9-8, with 3:31 left.  Karalyn Tetelman scored the tenth goal for the home team with 2:42 remaining in the game.  Kean added a late goal by Julie Knodt with 31 seconds remaining. 

St. Joseph's Ferchland led all scorers with five goals while Tori Gregson had two goals and two assists.

This was the second appearance for St. Joseph's in the ECAC Tournament and their first victory.
