Golden Eagles Lacrosse Grabs First Win Against SUNY Potsdam

Hilton Head, S.C. – The Golden Eagles (1-1) scooped up their first win of the season on Monday in a 10-9 victory over SUNY Potsdam (0-1). This was their first of of two competitions on a road trip down south.

Sophomore Meaghan Haber (East Northport, N.Y./ John Glenn) scored the first goal for the Golden Eagles with 22:30 on the clock. The next three goals to follow all came within about seven minutes with senior Caitlynn Webber (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) notching two straight and junior Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) adding one.  Ferchalnd put in another with 2:33 remaining in the first half.  By halftime, the Golden Eagles were up 5-3 in a nail-biting game.

Within the last ten minutes, SUNY Potsdam seemed to flick a switch and make it a bit more interesting, nearly tying the game up with just twenty seconds left.

Outstanding efforts came from Ferchland and Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y./ Islip) who each posted three goals for the team. The final score was telling – it was a tight game.  SJC had 28 shots compared to Potsdam's 24, while saves favored to the Bears, 14-13.

The Golden Eagles turned the ball over 18 times and won less than half of the ground balls, but seemed to pull it together in the end.

Keeper Courtney Wickline (Medford, N.Y./Bellport) was credited with 13 saves to even her record at 1-1.

Up next will be another neutral site game with Muhlenberg also in Hilton Head tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Weather permitting, the Golden Eagles will return home this Saturday for a non-conference match against SUNY Geneseo at 11 a.m.
