Women's Lacrosse's Comeback Bid Comes Up Short vs. Potsdam

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's lacrosse team saw its comeback bid fall short in a 12-9 non-conference defeat to SUNY Potsdam at home on Sunday afternoon. With the defeat, the Golden Eagles fall to 0-4 on the season while Potsdam improves to 2-2/

Tricia Barrett opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the contest, and less than a minute later Diana Johnston doubled SJC's goal total (2-0).  

Back-to-back goals by Cayla O'Connor (26:40) and Murphy Newman (24:05) knotted the score at two, but Nicole Stoppelli put the Golden Eagles back in front when she buried a feed from Chelsea Tarazona.

Three consecutive goals by the Bears gave them a two point margin (5-3) with 14:07 left in the first half, but Emily Fey closed SJC's gap to one after rifling shot past the keeper at 11:38. Five minutes later Barrett scored the equalizer (5-5) with 6:35 left in the first, but Potsdam's Murphy's goal in the closing moments ensured the guests entered the half up 6-5.

Picking up where she left off, Murphy scored her fifth goal of the contest three minutes into the second before O'Connor scored her second mark to give the Bears a three-goal lead (8-5).

Down 9-6 with 12:55 left in regulation, SJC went on a 3-0 run, with goals by Johnston Brooke Kreucher (2), to tie the game 9-9 with 7:10 to play.

Reversing momentum, the Bears finished the game strong with three goals off the sticks of Murphy, Danielle Pound, and Ashley Burrowes to down the Golden Eagles 12-9.

Johnston, Kreuscher, and Barrett all tallied a team-best two goals each, and Barrett recorded two assists on the night.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, March 19 when they face Worcester State in Hilton Head, SC.
