Lady Eagles Dogged by FDU Devils in Season Opener

Florham, N.J. - The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles women's soccer team hit the road to kick off the 2014 season.  Heading to Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham's annual tournament, the Golden Eagles fought hard but ultimately fell short to the host-Devils by a score of 2-1.

The Devils scored first in the 20th minute with a shot by Gabby Diaco that buzzed by Eagles' goalie Katie McGarrell (Selden, N.Y/Newfield).  McGarrell was very active to start off the match, having made three of her six saves prior to the first goal.  She rebounded quickly, continuing to register her next three saves of the game to round out the first half.

To start off the second half, there was little action.  Then, late in the 67th minute, freshman forward Kristin Carroll (Patchogue, N.Y/ Patchogue-Medford) perfectly crossed the ball into the box to set up a beautiful shot by freshman midfielder Claire Brady (Center Moriches, N.Y/ Center Moriches).  Carroll received her first assist, as well as sophomore midfielder Kathryn Condron (Ridge, N.Y/Longwood), while Brady registered her first goal of the season.

After the goal, both sides quickly made substitutions in the attempt the break up the 1-1 tie half way through the second half.  Coming in for SJC's Condron was junior midfielder Heather Nolan (Selden, N.Y/Newfield).

The SJC Golden Eagles looked rejuvenated after the quick break in the action, coming out with a couple of shots by Brady and Carroll.  However, the hot streak would not last as FDU-Florham's Diaco tipped the scales with a 10-yard strike in the 79th minute to take a 2-1 lead.

Brady, who was very active throughout her first SJC Golden Eagles appearance, tried to get something started in the 81st minute with a corner kick; but nothing came of it.  The Lady Devils wrapped up the game in complete control in the last 10 minutes, shutting out the Golden Eagles' offense from getting a shot on goal.

The first game of the season ended with a loss, but the Lady Eagles will look to get their first "W" of the season in day two of the FDU Tournament against Simmons, tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
