Golden Eagles Fall Short in Overtime, 3-2

Albany, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team (3-5-1, 2-2 Skyline) fell short of a goal as they dropped its contest 3-2 in a Skyline Conference match-up against the Sage Colleges. The Golden Eagles are now 2-2 in conference play as Sage improves to 7-3 on the year and 3-0 in conference play.

The Golden Eagles quickly recorded their first shot a minute into the game, but Jessica Cordano missed the target just high of the goal. Senior goalkeeper Katie McGarrell was tested quickly in the third minute, when she stopped back-to-back shots to keep the game scoreless 0-0. The breakthrough would come in the fifth minute, when senior Chelsea Bellini buried her fifth goal of the season to propell her side into the lead, 1-0.

In the 16th minute the Gators would respond with an equalizer scored by Taylor Lynch.  Both teams would trade shots, but neither could find the go-ahead goal as the first half would end with the score tied 1-1.

McGarrell recorded four saves and the Golden Eagles were awarded two corners in the first half.

Sage opened the second-half with a goal in the 51st minute to take the lead 2-1 with a goal off the foot of Samantha Trimblett. McGarrell was tested again, having to make two saves in the 55th minute of action.

Kristin Carroll would draw the game level at 2-2 in the 67th minute with her second goal of the season as Golden Eagles continued to pressure the Gator defense. SJC nearly took the lead in the 75h minute, when Carroll missed just wide. The two teams continued their back-and-forth battle but until the end of regulation, before they would head into overtime tied 2-2.

The Gators quickly attacked the goal to start the overtime period and earned an early corner. With the pressure, Ariannah Logan scored the golden goal for Sage, when she took buried her first of the afternon in the 95th minute to lift her side to a 3-2 in overtime.

McGarrell finished the afternoon with 13 saves and Sage keeper Nicole Maher had 11. Sage held the advantage in shots with 25 to SJC's 17. The hosts also had six corners to the Golden Eagles' five.

The Golden Eagles return home to take on the College of Staten Island on Wednesday, September 30. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
