Women's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Loss to William Paterson

Patchogue, NY| A late second-half goal off the foot of Lorraine Moffitt sunk the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team in a 1-0 defeat to William Paterson in a non-conference matchup at Danzi Stadium on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-5, while the Pioneers improve to 5-1-1.

In a match that saw the visitors outshoot its opponents 15-6, the Golden Eagles were still able to create chances, but failed to reach the back of the net.

It took until the 12th minute for William Paterson to register its first shot of the match, although the Pioneers controlled most of the play in the early going. The Golden Eagles saw their first scoring opportunity off a corner kick in the 32nd minute, when Jaclyn O'Shaughnessy played a set piece to the back corner, but Sam Caruso's shot went just wide of the goal.

After only tallying two shots in the first frame, the Golden Eagles pushed even harder in the second and doubled their shot total (4).

The Golden Eagles' backline, which was led by senior captain Katelyn Jones, held the Pioneers shotless until 76th minute when the visitors generated a couple of attempts including an Adrianna Oliveira shot that was parried by freshman goalkeeper Samantha Wedderburn. The saved shot would lead to a corner in the 78th minute. The played-in ball found the foot of Lorraine Moffitt, who used her back heel to slot it past Wedderburn for the lone goal of the game.

The Golden Eagles would take just one shot in the remaining 12 minutes but could not find the goal, as they fell to the Pioneers 1-0.

Paterson's keeper Angela Sandelli was forced into making two saves, while SJC's Wedderburn made six saves on the night.

The Golden Eagles are back at it on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host Sage in a Skyline matinee. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM. Follow the match with live stats here.
