Pioneers Outswim Eagles in This Season’s Only Home Meet

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (1-1) swim team had great individual performances but lost to William Patterson (7-1) 111-79.

In the 1000 Yard Freestyle, Taylor Buckley (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) took second with a time of 12:42:90 and Gabrielle Zollo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) finished third. The Eagles also finished second and third in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Kimberly Mazza (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) was less than two seconds behind the first place finisher and Melissa Nocco (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) finished just 2.5 seconds behind her. St. Joseph's got their first gold medal of the day when Lauren Ouzouounian (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) dominated her competition in the 200 Yard IM.

Mazza fell just short of first once again in the 100 Yard Freestyle. She was just 1.17 seconds behind Vera Blazevska of William Patterson. Ouzounian finished first in the 100 Yard Backstroke ahead of three William Patterson swimmers. Buckley and Nocco took second and third, respectively, in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Gabrielle Cannon (Bayshore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Janece Guerra (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took all 13 available points in the 100 Yard Breastroke. Cannon came in first and Guerra right behind her. The Eagles beat out the Pioneers by four seconds in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Gabrielle Zollo separated her team from William Patterson on the third leg of the relay and Ouzounian brought it home.

The Eagles dominated the last four events of the day but ultimately it wasn't enough to mount a comeback. They will compete in the ECAC Championships on December 6th and 7th at Lehman College.
