Bears Float Past Eagles in "East vs. West" Meet

Brooklyn, N.Y. — The Lady Golden Eagles (1-2) fell to the Brooklyn Bears (2-5) at this year's annual SJC 'East vs. West' sibling rivalry showdown.  The Eagles' individual efforts kept them afloat and in the game but their inability to pull through in the relays cost them the win, as they scored only 43 points while Brooklyn logged 52.  Sophomore Kimberly Mazza (Bohemia, N.Y./ Connetquot) earned the title of Skyline Swimmer of the Week for her outstanding efforts in the competition.

Gabrielle Zollo (West Islip, N.Y./ West Islip) came in first place for both the 1000 Yard Freestyle (13:40.59) and the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:12.61) event. Melissa Nocco grabbed first place for both the 100 Yard Freestyle (1:04.33) and the 200 Yard Freestyle (2:20.17).  Lauren Ouzounian (East Setauket, N.Y./ Ward Melville) swam like the wind, being the first to finish the 200 Yard IM (2:33.88) as well as the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:07.32). Kimberly Mazza proved that she has both speed and endurance to offer, placing first in both the 50 Yard Freestyle (28.68) as well as the 500 Yard Freestyle (6:15.14).

The Eagles' "A" team came in second for the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:17.90, only .53 of a second behind Brooklyn.  The "A" team finished second again in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 2:07.31, four seconds behind the first place Bears.

The Lady Eagles will swim again on January 14 as they compete against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners.
