Eagle Swimmers Fall to Merchant Marine

Kings Point, N.Y. – It was a long night for the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (1-3) in the pool on Tuesday night as they were defeated 108-63 at the hands of USMMA who improved to 6-1 on the season.

Merchant Marine dominated every event with the exception of Event 13, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Kim Mazza (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) was less than a second away from her opponents in the 50 Yard Freestyle as she settled for third place. Lauren Ouzounian (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) took on three USMMA swimmers in the 200 Yard IM. She led for most of the race but ultimately came in second place just 0.18 seconds behind the winner.

Gabrielle Zollo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) was defeated by just .21 seconds in the 100 Yard Butterfly as she took home a second place finish. Kim Mazza took second, a couple seconds behind Jolyn Green of USMMA in the 100 Yard Freestyle. Melissa Nocco (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) finished second in the 500 Yard Freestyle and Janece Guerra (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.

The Lady Eagles went into the final event, seeking their only first place finish of the day and they delivered. The Eagles put out their "A" team for the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay and took all 11 points from USMMA.

The St. Joseph's swim team will travel to Mount St. Mary on January 18th for a Skyline Conference matchup before returning home on Monday for a meet with New Rochelle.
