Women’s Swimming Claims 4th Place at 2016 Skyline Championships

Throggs Neck, NY|The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's swimming team wrapped up its 2015-16 season with a fourth-place finish at the Skyline Conference Championships, tallying 142 points at the conclusion of the two-day event held on the campus of SUNY Maritime on Friday and Saturday.

The Golden Eagles maintained their fourth-place position after collecting 68 points on Friday by scoring 74 points on Saturday.

Gabrielle Zollo earned a sixth-place finish (1:01.25) in the first event of the afternoon—the 100 yard free—while Julie Garvey performed nearly three seconds better (1:03.83) than her seed time in the same event.

Lorraine Diehl gained a point for SJC with a season-best time (2:37.90) and a 12th-place finish in 200 yard backstroke. In the very next event—the 200 yard breaststroke—Marissa Palmeri shaved almost seven seconds off her seed time with a sixth-place finish clocking in at 3:04.93.

Kim Mazza dwarfed her season-best time of 6:05.72 in the 500 yard free with a 5:49:78 effort and a sixth-place finish. Mazza would later grab the team's only top-five individual performance with a fourth-place finish (2:30.84) in the 200 yard IM.

In the afternoon's final event—the 400 yard free relay—Mazza, Zollo, Garvey and Natalie Armellino place fifth with a time of 4:11.44.

"After a long season of hard work and dedication, the girls turned in their best performances of the season this weekend," said head coach Stephanie Palmeri. "I'm very proud of this group and hope to build on our success next season.

Mount Saint Mary claimed the women's title with a score of 466 with Purchase St. coming in second with 281 points. Sarah Lawrence finished third (269 points), and Maritime (132 points), St. Joseph's (Brkln) (78 points), Mount Saint Vincent (57) and Old Westbury (23 points) rounded out the field.
