First Things First - W. Tennis Tops Yeshiva in Season Opener

Patchogue, N.Y. - The Golden Eagle's women's tennis (1-0, 1-0 SKY) team rolled through the opposing Yeshiva University Maccabees (1-2, 1-1 SKY) on Wednesday, 6-2, for their first Skyline Conference win of the young year.  After having their season opening match against Lehman cancelled, the team was anxious to get their first win at home.

The Golden Eagles were unstoppable in their three doubles matches, sweeping the Maccabees 3-0.  Freshman Shannon Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) and junior Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) won their doubles match of a score of 8-6.  Following, sophomore Rita Wehrli (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and sophomore Erika Hasselberg (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) breezed through, finishing 8-4.  The most dominating tandem that St. Joseph's College put out on the court was the freshman-senior duo of freshman Kerri Cetin (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and senior Lindsey Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) as they rounded-out the sweep with a 8-2 socre.

As for the singles, SJC finished with three wins, two losses, and one match went unfinished due to darkness.  Wehrli and Shannon Merker blew out their singles competitors, while Hasselberg fended off a tough matchup at fifth singles.

Head coach Glenn Nathan's squad looked strong in their 2014 season opener.  In his 12th season as head coach, he has a knack for producing a winning team and this group of athletes showed their dominance in an important Skyline Conference win against the Maccabees.

The Golden Eagles will look to win consecutive home matches as they take on the York College Cardinals this Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
