Eagles Topple Sage in Key Skyline Win

Troy, N.Y. - Bouncing back from a loss to Pratt Institute, the Golden Eagles women's tennis team (3-1, 2-0 SKY) beat out Sage College (2-6, 0-2 SKY) on the road, 5-4, in an important Skylien Conference match.

Erika Hasselberg (Shirley, N.Y. /William Floyd) and Rita Wherli (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) led the way in the doubles, registering another win for this sophomore duo.  Behind them, senior Lindsey Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) and freshman Kerri Cetin (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) held off the raging Gators in a close win to take a 2-1 lead on the day.

In the singles matches, both teams were going shot-for-shot until the final two matches.  Kerri Cetin and Lindsey Merker were the heroes of the day, capping off both the doubles and singles wins.  The freshman swept her opponent in two sets, while L. Merker took a 6-2 lead in her first set and never looked back.  The freshman-senior tag team has been dominant this season, leading St. Joseph's College to a 3-1 record.

The Golden Eagles women's tennis team heads to New Rochelle, N.Y. this Tuesday, September 23 for a 4:30 p.m. matchup against the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (0-1).  New Rochelle has been eager to get back on the court, having had their past two games postponed due to severe weather.  The Golden Eagles will try to take advantage of the stagnant Blue Angels, hoping to catch fire heading into their next Skyline Conference matchup later in the week against Farmingdale State.
