W. Tennis Rolls Past Bard Raptors for Fifth Win of Year

Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. - The Golden Eagles women's tennis team rebounded from last week's loss with a dominating win over Bard College (0-5) on Monday evening.  Increasing their overall record to 5-2 on the season, the tennis team led by Coach Glenn Nathan will be looking to carry their momentum forward as they get ready to start a string of important Skyline Conference matches to round out their season.

The team was short-handed yesterday, but they still managed to shut out the Bard Raptors until the final singles match.  Since the team was unable to field a qualifying player in the final singles match, they were forced to forfeit and give Bard their only win on the day.

The duos of Shannon Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) and Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North), and Rita Wehrli (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and Erika Hasselbirg (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) competed in the doubles matches for St. Joseph's College yesterday.  Winning both matches, the Golden Eagles continued to overpower their opponents in doubles.

Not having a partner for the doubles due to the team being short-handed, Veronica Urbom (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) did not miss the opportunity to shine in her only match of the day.  Beating her opponent in both sets of her singles match, Urbom continued to show why she deserves to be on the clay everyday as a freshman.

The women's tennis team hits the road on Wednesday, October 8 to play a friendly exhibition match against Suffolk County Community College at 3:30 p.m.  The Golden Eagles will be getting their last opportunity to tune up their game before playing their final five Skyline Conference matches of the season.
