Golden Eagles W. Tennis Shuts Down Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, 9-0

Patchogue, N.Y. – The Lady Eagles women's tennis team (7-2, 4-0 Skyline) swept the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons, 9-0, at the St. Joseph's College's Outdoor Complex. The doubles matches were played on Friday, but due to inclement weather the singles matches were postponed to Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles crushed the Gyrphons in doubles play. Doubles partners Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, N.Y. / Sachem North) and Shannon Merker (Flanders, N.Y. / McGann-Mercy) and Rita Wehrli (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and Erika Hesselbirg (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) both teamed up to defeat their opponents by a score of 8-3. Also, Lindsey Merker (Flanders, N.Y. / McGann-Mercy) and Veronica Urbom (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Sachem North) came together to hand Sarah Lawrence's #3 doubles an 8-4 loss.

In singles competition, SJC's Shannon Merker and Veronica Urbom dominated their opponents, winning their matches in straight sets.  Merker defeated her opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-1, while Urbom won her match 6-0, 6-3.

St. Joseph's College's four remaining singles: Kelley McGrath, Rita Wehrli, Keri Cetin (Centereach, N.Y. / Centereach) and Erika Hesselbirg were all victorious after beating their opponents in an extra set.  McGrath scored 3-6, 7-6, 10-8; Wehril tallied 6-4, 6-7, 10-8; Cetin recorded 4-6, 6-4, 10-8; Hasselbirg scored 1-6, 6-1, and 6-1.

The Golden Eagles lopsided victory over the Gyrphons marks St. Joseph's College's third shutout victory of the season.
