Women's Tennis Grabs the Second Seed for Skyline Tournament

New York, N,Y. - The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles are the two-seed for this week's Skyline Women's Tennis Championship.  On Wednesday, the semifinal round will feature St. Joseph's (8-3) hosting third-seeded Yeshiva University (6-3).  

SJC posted a 5-1 ledger in Skyline play and the talented tandem of junior Kelley McGrath and freshman Shannon Merker boast a 7-3 record at No. 1 doubles while combining for 11 wins in singles action.  Sophomore Erika Hesselbirg is 4-1 at No. 5 singles and boasts a steady conference doubles record at 4-1.  

Defending champion Farmingdale State is the top seed. The Rams (11-1) registered a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play with all six of their victories coming by scores of 9-0.  FSC is led by senior Jessica Sickles, who boasts a 10-2 overall record at the No. 1 singles flight.  

Farmingdale State will host No. 4 Sage (7-7) on Wednesday, Oct. 22, in semifinal action.  Under the direction of first-year head coach Tom Fashouer, the Gators secured their second consecutive berth in the Skyline Championship with a 6-3 win over Purchase on Oct. 19.   Senior co-captain and ITA Northeast Championship semifinalist Kirsten Ackerman leads Sage with a 14-2 mark in singles play this season. 

Making its first appearance in the Skyline Championship since 2004, Yeshiva notched a 4-2 mark in league contests.  YU freshman Shani Hava owns a 5-2 record at the No. 1 singles flight and is a three-time Rookie of the Week selection.
