Women's Tennis Hands Staten Island First Loss of the Season

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team defeated the College of Staten Island 5-4 in a tightly contested match-up at the Outdoor Field Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles soar to a 4-1 start, as the College of Staten Island (5-1) suffers their first loss the season.

The tandem of Victoria Panicola and Rita Wherli got the Golden Eagles started winning the first point of the match by defeating Michelle Kushnir and Hannah Ramirez 8-5. The College of Staten Island jumped ahead winning both double points as Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert and Madiha Mulla handed Shannon Merker and Victoria Makulik an 8-5 loss. The second double match featured Kelley McGrath and Michelle Stanczak who just fell short of a victory dropping their contest 8-6.

The Golden Eagles tied the match up 2-2, as Stanczak defeated Jonaldy Edouard 6-0, 6-1, The Dolphins recaptured the lead as Bragerton-Nasert defeated Merker 6-2, 6-0. Kelly McGrath made the match even as she defeated Viktoriya Volkova in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

St. Joseph's saw its first lead of the afternoon as Panicola defeated Mazier 6-4, 6-0 to take the 4-3 lead. Staten Island quickly tied up the match as Kushnir defeated Erika Hesselbirg 6-4, 7-5.

Both teams were tied 4-4 as Mukulik claimed the fifth point to clinch the victory for the Golden Eagles defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-3.

The Golden Eagles will return to conference play on Saturday Sept. 26 as they take on Purchase St. at the Outdoor Field Complex at 12:00 PM.
