Women's Tennis Defeats Purchase St. 8-1

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team improved to 5-1 (1-1 Skyline) on the season after taking down Skyline Conference rival Purchase St. 8-1 on Saturday afternoon at home. For the Golden Eagles, it's their fifth win in a row, as Purchase slides to 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

Erika Hesselbirg and Victoria Panicola took the first point for the Golden Eagles as they defeated Maggie Lavin and Nastaja Stepec 8-1. The tandem of Victoria Makulik and Michelle Stanczak were the victors in their match against Catherine Pasquale and Caroline Haldeman-Emmerling by the score of 8-5. The Panthers scored their only point of the game when Emma Yavel and Erika Fulton defeated Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath.

In the singles matchups, Panicola defeated Nadia Shadi 6-1, 6-0, and Stanczak defeated Hannah Youssef 6-1, 6-1. Hesselbirg scored the fifth point for the Golden Eagles winning her match 6-1, 6-2. McGrath defeated Haldeman-Emmerling 6-1, 6-0.

Makulik dropped her first set 6-0, and was down 4-0 in the second set before rallying back to defeat Fulton 6-4. Makulik would take complete her impressive comeback victory winning the tie-breaker 10-3.

Merker took Yavel to a tiebreak as well, and claimed a 6-1, 7-6, 9-7 victory in the process.

The Golden Eagles are back on the court on Monday, September 28 when they take on Suffolk County Community College 5:00 PM at the Outdoor Field Complex.
