Women’s Tennis Wins First-Ever Skyline Title

Purchase, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team was crowned Skyline Conference champion for the first time in the program's history on Saturday afternoon when it defeated SUNY Purchase, 5-1, in the championship final.

The Golden Eagles, who improve to 9-3 overall on the year with the win, earn an automatic bid into the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship in the spring.

The second doubles pairing of Amanda Post and Nora Burnett opened the afternoon for the Golden Eagles with an 8-5 win, and after a first-doubles loss, Mackenzie Martocci and Alana Caporale picked up an 8-6 win at third doubles to ensure SJC took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Lindsey Charrier recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at sixth singles (3-1) and Taylor Hanscom followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles (4-1) to put the Golden Eagles on the brink of their first title. Shortly thereafter, it would be Martocci, who, with a 6-4, 7-5 win at fifth singles, clinched the championship for the second-seeded guests.

On the back of her dominant third singles win, Hanscom was named the championship's Most Outstanding Player.

Back on October 15, in the team's final regular season match of the season, the Golden Eagles were defeated, 5-4, by Purchase and entered the postseason with a 5-1 conference record, earning them the second seed in the tournament.

Head coach Glenn Nathan, who has led the team for 15 years, wins his first conference title with the women's team. He guided the men's program to Skyline championships in 2009 and 2010.
