Track & Field Kicks Off 2013 at NYU's Gotham Cup

New York, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's College men's and women's indoor track & field teams kicked off 2013 at the New Balance Track & Field Center for the Gotham Cup hosted by NYU. The event featured squads from Division I, II, and III.

MEN
The men's top performer was senior Jonathan Afanador (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) who competed in the mile crossing the finish line at 4:31.22 which broke the 7 year school record held by alumnus Bryan Knipfing 06'.

Junior Brian Wersan (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and freshman Mario Mayen (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) took first and second in their heat in the 500m with a time of 1:07.88 and 1:07.96 respectively.

WOMEN
Freshman Brittany Guttieri (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) had an impressive day as she broke the school record in the mile crossing the finish line at 5:31.73 taking 1st in her heat. Later she competed in the 800m finishing with a time of 2:34.30.

Freshman Samantha Baculy (Farmingville, N.Y./Connetquot) bettered her school record in the 60meter hurdles with a time of 11.70.

Sophomore AnnMarie Zigrosser (Bayport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) made her indoor 5000m debut crossing the finish line at 19:38.52 which shattered the previous school record held by alumnus Allison Waka 12'.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, January 19 traveling to Middletown, Conn. to compete in the Wesleyan Invitational. The event will be held by Wesleyan University and is slated to start at 10:00 a.m.
